Beiersdorf and Carrefour have joined forces to drastically reduce CO2 emissions from the hygiene and beauty sector in France. Two major initiatives aim to transform the logistics and eco-design of deodorants.

Beiersdorf and Carrefour have signed a strategic agreement to accelerate the decarbonization of the hygiene and beauty sector in supermarkets. This ambitious commitment, which aligns Beiersdorf's Net Zero 2045 objective with Carrefour's climate strategy, calls for a 79 % reduction in transport-related CO2 emissions by 2030, compared with 2018. Another key initiative concerns the NIVEA deodorant category, for which a 50 % reduction in emissions is forecast thanks to eco-design and format diversification.

Two key areas of transformation

The agreement focuses on two main areas. The first concerns the reorganization of logistics in France, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 79 % by 2030. To achieve this, Beiersdorf and Carrefour will introduce a mix of rail and road transport, increase the use of biofuels and optimize truck filling. The second axis focuses on transforming the deodorant category, with the aim of halving its environmental impact. This involves using recycled materials and raising consumer awareness of low-carbon products.

This agreement goes beyond a simple commercial relationship and illustrates the ability to work together to create sustainable value. »says Alice Jactel, Beiersdorf General Manager France & Benelux. Jean-François Pascal, Vice-President sustainability Beiersdorf, adds: « Decarbonization can only be achieved through collective efforts. With Carrefour, we have a joint plan that will radically transform our logistics systems. "

Faced with increasingly stringent regulations on PFAS, SGS offers advanced testing solutions to help cosmetics brands comply and win the trust of consumers.

Cosmetics manufacturers are faced with a rapidly changing regulatory landscape, particularly in Europe and the United States, where per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS), often described as« eternal chemicals »These compounds are subject to increasing restrictions. In this respect, SGS offers advanced testing solutions to accurately detect these compounds in cosmetic products.

Advanced testing for compliance and confidence

Using methods such as liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), SGS enables precise detection and quantification of known PFAS. What's more, total fluorine analysis offers comprehensive screening of known and unknown fluorinated compounds. This fulfils a dual requirement: ensuring regulatory compliance and meeting growing consumer demand for PFAS-free products.

Committed to sustainability, SGS integrates its specialized PFAS testing services into its IMPACT NOW sustainability initiative, which aims for a climate-neutral, nature-friendly future. This framework provides brands with the means to make smarter decisions, linked to compliance and environmental responsibility.

The Pulp in Action consortium of 50 cosmetics companies is tackling the challenge of sustainable, plastic-free packaging, pushing innovation towards paper-based solutions. Three years of research have produced promising prototypes.

Driven by a desire for sustainability and plastic reduction, the Pulp in Action consortium brings together 50 companies from the cosmetics industry. Their mission is to develop environmentally-friendly packaging from paper and cellulose fibers. This project is in line with the Plastic Act 2021, an ambitious framework aimed at significantly reducing plastic use in the sector.

A model of coopetition

Pulp in Action is based on an innovative principle of «coopetition», where companies compete but unite to advance pre-competitive initiatives, respecting the competitive legal framework. This has broken down barriers between major global brands and startups, propelling the project towards a collective futuristic vision. Clémence Mazeron, R&D Project Manager at Gascogne Flexible, comments: « from porous to functionalized fibers, from simple 2D sheets to 3D packaging! "

Initial results and acceptance strategies

After three years of research, a few prototypes such as cellulose pouches and tubes without a plastic coating have seen the light of day. However, to make this transition a success, consumer support is crucial.« Winning over customers through design, touch and perceived value »explains David Guérin, Packaging Science Center Director at L'Oréal. Offering a tangible and desirable alternative is now an integral part of Pulp in Action's strategy.
