Cherries for the new Naturex Beauty Food range

Product -

Naturex expands its "Beauty Food" range of food-based skincare ingredients. The new collection "Energy Boost includes concepts formulated from extracts of dogwood (cornelian cherry) and acerola.

Cornelian cherry - tomorrow's superfruit
Dogwood (Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc) is an antioxidant-rich fruit used in traditional Chinese medicine. This new ingredient is perfectly in tune with the two major trends in cosmetics today: "superfruits" and Asian inspiration. Less well known than some other Asian medicine ingredients, cornelian cherry offers real potential for innovation and differentiation. Drawing on its botanical knowledge and experience, Naturex believes that cornelian could become a highly successful cosmetic ingredient in the near future - just as cranberry was a few years ago.
The antioxidant power of dogwood and its benefits for the skin have been demonstrated. Studies in vitro have shown that it stimulates by 710 % the production of catalase, an enzyme protecting the skin from oxidative stress. In addition, it increases by 120 % the production of glutathione reductase, an enzyme essential for maintaining the oxidative balance of cells. Dogwood has also been shown to reduce lipid peroxidation by 40 %. This true "superfruit" is also renowned for its soothing properties and radiance-enhancing benefits.

Acerola - the vitamin C superstar
Acerola (Malpighia glabra L.) is renowned for its high vitamin C content and antioxidant power. It is now recognized as one of the most promising superfruits. Produced in Brazil via a responsible and sustainable supply chain, Naturex acerola powder extract has 26 times the antioxidant activity of orange.

Two innovative concepts
The number of new products containing dogwood and acerola increased significantly between 2012 and 2016, by 183 % for dogwood, and 36 % for acerola (Mintel data). Naturex has harnessed the benefits of these two berries to create two new Energy Boost concepts:
- Face ice cream - a luxurious face cream, enriched with extracts of dogwood and acerola for an antioxidant boost
- ACG Cocktail - a light, refreshing mist with acerola, Chakah honey and guarana to give skin a healthy dose of energy

Both products will be presented at Cosmetics 360 in Paris (October 18 and 19, 2017) and SCC California (October 25 and 26, 2017).

Emilie Danckaert, Global Category Manager, comments: "Our Beauty Food range illustrates how today's healthy foods can inspire tomorrow's cosmetics. Thanks to our extensive experience in plant extracts for the cosmetics and food industries, Naturex is perfectly able to identify ingredients - such as dogwood and acerola - that can also prove effective and efficient in skincare products."

The Energy Boost collection complements two other collections in the Beauty Food range: Indulgence and Detox. To find out more about these concepts, visit the Naturex stand at Cosmetics 360 and SCC California.

The Court of Cassation gives reason to Caudalie in its lawsuit against 1001PharmaciesM

Caudalie French Kiss Lip Balm - Lip balm

Caudalie has just obtained from the French Supreme Court the right to prohibit 1001Pharmacies from marketing Caudalie products via its online sales platform.
A French cosmetics brand, Caudalie markets its products through a selective distribution network of approved pharmacies in France and Europe. Internet distribution of Caudalie products is reserved for pharmacies with their own websites, and which have been approved for sales in their pharmacies.

As a reminder, at the end of 2014, Caudalie took eNova Santé to the Paris Commercial Court, claiming a manifestly unlawful disturbance resulting from the sale of its products on the 1001 Pharmacies online sales platform. Caudalie considered that the sale of its products on this non-approved platform constituted a breach of its selective distribution network. On December 31, 2014, the Commercial Court ruled in Caudalie's favor.
On February 2, 2016, the Paris Court of Appeal nonetheless ruled that the prohibition in principle of online sales via a platform was likely to constitute a restriction of competition.
This decision gave rise to lively legal debates, to the point where some questioned the future of selective distribution.
On September 13, the French Supreme Court overturned this decision. Caudalie can now once again demand the withdrawal of its products from the 1001Pharmacies platform. The Cour de Cassation has firmly reiterated that in the presence of a selective distribution network whose legality has been established, as Caudalie's has been by the Conseil de la Concurrence, there is no reason to contest its right to prohibit the sale of its products on unauthorized online sales platforms.
The European Commission had also, on May 10, 2017, in its final report on the e-commerce sector inquiry, validated that the ban on the use of online sales platforms did not constitute a hardcore restriction of competition.

"We are very pleased with the decision handed down by the French Supreme Court. Selectivity has always been at the heart of our distribution strategy. In these proceedings, we wanted above all to defend the network of our approved pharmacists, who supported us in this approach", declared Bertrand Thomas, founder of CAUDALIE, when the decision was handed down.

Croda invests in the New Technologies company Cutitronics

cream - Ride

Croda International Plc "Croda", creator and manufacturer of high-performance specialty chemicals used by industries and consumers worldwide, today announced its investment in the multi-award-winning company "Cutitronics". The company is known for developing a new digital solution to meet the demands of cosmetics consumers.
In response to the growing demand for personalized skin treatments, Croda recognized the need to seek out more innovative technologies. This led to their taking a minority stake in Cutitronics, whose patented handheld device assesses skin health and prepares it to optimize the action of the skincare formula it releases.
The company, which grew out of the University of Strathcycle in Scotland, was established in 2014. The device developed by Cutitronics, the CutiTron, currently in the prototype stage, analyzes the skin's condition and takes into account aspects that can influence its state, such as the environment. It then offers a tailor-made application to a specifically targeted area of the skin. This device will also help Croda in its future product development. It provides a far greater amount of data than before, and gives Croda a better understanding of consumer needs and the factors that influence those needs.
Croda has a unique commercial agreement with Cutitronics. This relationship is a direct result of Croda's commitment to its open innovation program with UK universities. This remains a key strategic focus for Croda, which will continue to invest in this area.
Sandra Breene, President of Personal Care and North America at Croda, will join the Cutitronics Board of Directors as a non-executive director to share her 25 years of knowledge of the cosmetics market. Cutitronics will also benefit from Croda's formulation expertise, as well as its proven ability to bring new innovations to market.
Breene said: "I'm delighted to be personally involved in this partnership, which will enable Croda not only to be part of this intelligent application platform, but also to use the latest digital technologies and the data recorded on them to enrich its knowledge of consumer behavior."
"We have long known that digitalization will play a key role in our growth strategy. With this wealth of information, we can continue to develop innovative and sustainable ingredients, provide better guiding formulas as well as share our knowledge with our customers to help them develop the next generation of products that will meet the still unmet needs of the market."
Dr David Heath, founder and CEO of Cutitronics: "Having validated the CutiTron technologically and commercially, Croda's support will enable us to bring our technology to market. Their long-standing reputation for delivering innovative solutions to the cosmetics industry is invaluable to us, and we are very much looking forward to working with such a responsive and forward-looking company."
