A biodegradable pea-based film-forming agent

Roquette Beauté

At in-cosmetics Global, to be held in Paris from April 16 to 18, 2024, Roquette Beauté will unveil Beauté by Roquette ST 730 (Inci Hydroxypropyl Starch) to the cosmetics industry. This new ingredient responds to growing consumer demand for plant-derived cosmetics that combine sustainability and clinically proven efficacy in their skincare and make-up products.

Peas: a sustainable resource

Beauté by Roquette ST 730 is derived from pea starch, a sustainable and attractive crop with minimal impact on water resources, climate change and land use. In line with Roquette's circular production model, the company uses nearly 100 % of yellow pea grain components, contributing to a positive environmental footprint.

Superior water resistance to synthetic film-formers

Roquette Beauté reminds us that, in make-up applications, long wear and water resistance are key benefits. Worldwide, more than half of make-up consumers say they prefer a product with long-lasting properties.1 at the time of purchase.

In various studies, Beauté by Roquette ST 730 at 5 % has shown, according to Roquette Beauté, superior water resistance to market reference film-forming agents such as pullulan and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), at the same concentration.

Reduced wrinkles

Another sought-after quality: tensor effects in eye and face care products, as consumers look for visible results in these delicate, wrinkle-prone areas.

A study in vivo2 was carried out on 40 volunteers to analyze the tightening effect of the new ingredient. According to Roquette Beauté, Beauté by Roquette ST 730 at 4 % significantly reduces fine lines and wrinkles. A large majority of subjects (82 %) reported that their fine lines and wrinkles were reduced.

"We are very proud of the addition of Beauté by Roquette ST 730 to our product range, says Bénédicte Courel, General Manager of Roquette Beauté. Consumers are keen to make their skincare and make-up routines more sustainable, replacing synthetic or controversial ingredients with plant-based alternatives, without compromising on efficacy or benefits. Beauté by Roquette ST 730 is a game-changer for cosmetics brands wishing to incorporate plant-based ingredients into their formulations while delivering a visible tightening effect to consumers."

2. Beauté by Roquette ST 730 was evaluated at 4 % and compared to a placebo. Skin relief parameters were measured on 40 volunteers (aged 45 to 65), in a single application, using the 3D Primos Lite (LMI Technologies).

Global Bioenergies: letters of intent from the cosmetics industry for its new Isonaturane plant

Face cream

For its large-scale plant project, Global Bioenergies, an industrial biology player, announces that it has received letters of intent representing over 2,500 tonnes of Isonaturane per year from cosmetics players based in several regions of the world. These purchase intentions represent annual sales of over 70 million euros.

From 2027, this plant, mainly dedicated to cosmetics, will market Isonaturane 12 and 16, natural equivalents to petroleum-based isododecane and isohexadecane. Limited to 2,500 tonnes of elements produced, the new site will be smaller than planned in order to concentrate on the most profitable markets: make-up and prestige skincare products.

"We had initially wanted to increase the plant's capacity to 10,000 tonnes, which would have meant addressing markets such as make-up remover and deodorant. These mass markets require large volumes at low cost, which would inevitably have driven down our selling prices. By limiting the size of the plant, we reduce the amount of Capex required to build it, and target markets willing to pay the best price for naturalness. The plant's economic profile maintains its margin prospects while reducing the investment required, with purchasing intentions now exceeding the plant's capacity and projected annual sales of over €70 million."explains Marc Delcourt, co-founder and CEO of Global Bioenergies.

In addition to cosmetics, the plant is intended to launch the market for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), using the same technology to produce a formulation that can be used perfectly as an aviation fuel, blending up to 50 % with fossil kerosene. Global Bioenergies' process is one of the few in the world to benefit from the necessary ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) certification. The company plans to deploy its process on a large scale in the aviation sector from the opening of the market in 2030, when the threshold for incorporating DAC into kerosene will rise to 6 % in the European Union.

The first plans for the plant have been finalized. Five areas will be formalized in the plant: isobutene production by fermentation, isobutene purification, conversion to isododecane and isohexadecane, effluent and energy management. The French government has already announced its support for the project at the end of 2023, with the award of €16.4 million in public aid via the Première usine call for projects led by Bpifrance as part of the France 2030 plan. The total cost of building the plant has been estimated at nearly 80 million euros.

Distributed in France by HTDS and developed by Dylog, Dylight 40 has been designed to meet the requirements of increasingly complex and competitive markets in terms of automatic inspection. In particular, it can inspect light, compact food products (snacks, energy bars, sweets, powdered products, etc.), as well as their packaging (thermoformed plastic trays, cardboard boxes, sachets, etc.), for which very low power is sufficient. The Dylight 40 is also suitable for testing cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, pre-packaged or bulk products.

"This new device combines the latest design and engineering technologies with Dylog's powerful and intuitive new software."says HTDS.

The new Dylight 40 RX scanner completes the DYmond and DYnamite range of vertical "strip" inspection machines, and can be classified as the smaller version of the DYmond range (standardized low-power version). An extension of the Dylight 80 scanner, the Dylight 40 features a detection tunnel with 0.4 mm resolution.

The RX Dylight 40 scanner offers users a "plug & play" solution that's easy to position on the production line. Its user-friendly software and optimized mechanical solutions (conveyor speed up to 100m/min) make it easy to use.

Its compact design allows it to be used in small spaces, without the need to modify the production line.

"These features make this new inspection machine particularly innovative, as its easy installation in small spaces is a decisive factor for the X-ray machine industry."says HTDS.

Like all vertical inspection machines, the RX Dylight 40 scanner has also been configured with advanced functions for identifying missing parts or checking weight, and for managing multi-line inspections using specific peripherals.

Gericke announces Floveyor disc elevators

Floveyor_TankerLoader - Gericke

Gericke has been distributing Floveyor aeromechanical disc conveyors for over 30 years.

Designed to lift powders or granulates at high flow rates, these elevators are based on the movement of disks mounted on a cable moving in a conveying tube. For example, in a 100 mm diameter tube, it is possible to achieve a throughput of 25 T/h over a 10-meter elevation.

The largest model in the Floveyor range can achieve flows of 100 T/h over a 20-meter elevation.

Widely used for filling or emptying silos, bulk trucks, big-bags or bags, for example, this technology offers multiple advantages, according to Gericke: they consume little energy, are totally sealed, and preserve the quality of the products conveyed. Low noise levels are another advantage.

Different configurations are available for handling food, chemical or mineral products.

U'Cosmetics: 15th edition focusing on cosmetics and the marine environment

U'cosmetics 2024

Thursday, March 21, 2024 saw the 15th edition of U'Cosmetics, organized by the Université Catholique de l'Ouest (UCO) Bretagne Nord on the theme "Cosmetics & the marine environment: let's innovate on the surface and in depth!", an event supported by 40 partners - ingredient suppliers, manufacturers of raw materials and cosmetic products, trade press, institutional partners.

The event was organized by two students from the Master 1 "Ingénierie des produits et process - métiers de la cosmétique" ("Product and Process Engineering - Cosmetics Professions") program, supervised by university lecturers, and supported by a scientific and technical committee of five cosmetics professionals. Comprising a symposium and a student competition, the event attracted over 240 participants.

During the symposium, nine professionals contributed their expertise before moving on to the awards ceremony.

Competing students, in teams of one to five, had to imagine and present a cosmetics project in formulation innovation or innovative concept related to the theme. Some 165 students divided into 46 teams took part.

The members of the jury, made up of key players in the cosmetics industry, met to select the three winning projects from the 11 finalists. The winners received their awards on Thursday March 21.

Innovative projects

In the Formulation innovation category, aimed at projects presenting a finished product that complies with European regulations on cosmetic products, candidates had to highlight at least one innovation related to the theme of cosmetics and the marine environment. First prize was awarded to La Perle de Koraÿe, a project by Julie Chahir, Louise Keryquel and Maxime Questel, students at UCO Bretagne Nord and École de Guerre Économique (EGE). The idea: to transform users' beauty routines. This innovative double solid serum in single-dose form has been designed for those exposed to the rigors of the marine climate. Available as a monthly treatment, it combines 16 marine active ingredients to repair and protect the skin.

A 2nd prize in the same category went to Ocean Pills, a project led by Sandra Ear from Compiègne University of Technology (UTC). "Ocean Pills offers a range of innovative neurocosmetics in the form of single-dose lozenges. In contact with water, they transform into a gel with a fresh, melting texture. Composed of a cleanser and an exfoliating mask, this range creates an anti-pollution routine for moisturized, soothed and regenerated skin, and provides an experience that goes beyond beauty - a real sense of well-being!" according to its designer.

The 1st Innovative Concept prize was awarded to UVérif, a project led by Charlotte Bréart de Boisanger, Margaux Brognier, Julie Boucheron, Camille Boutet and Emilie Bouvet from the École de Biologie Industrielle (EBI). "The UVerif innovation is a two-in-one product that combines a highly effective sunscreen with SPF50+, offering robust UV protection, and a sun overexposure indicator to signal the optimum time to reapply sunscreen. The latter is accompanied by a stencil in the shape of a sea animal for a playful application suitable for children."say the students.

The Innovative Concept category was aimed at projects presenting an innovative concept related to the theme of cosmetics and the marine environment. The jury paid particular attention to the originality of the concept presented, as well as to the marketing approach, the market study, the promotion of the innovative character, the brand universe, and so on.

The Philippe Collas - Coup de cœur du public prize was awarded to the project chosen by Internet users. The choice was made independently of the category in which the project competed, via an online voting form. Ostreall, a project by Laura Alexandre-Alexis, Laura Castagnetti and Axelle Mercier from the École nationale supérieure d'agronomie et des industries alimentaires (Ensaia), won the prize. With over 98% % of natural origin, Ostreall is an exfoliating face mask based on marine active ingredients. Pearly pearls hide inside the oyster-shaped container. When pressed against the skin, they release the mask, which transforms into an exfoliating milk when rinsed off.

See you in March 2025

The 16th edition of U'Cosmetics will take place on March 13, 2025 and will focus on the following theme: "Man and cosmetics?"

The men's cosmetics industry has experienced significant growth in recent years, underlining the importance of innovation in this sector.

The question mark stems from the trend towards an increasingly inclusive society: what makes a product masculine or feminine for the same promises? What is the place of men in cosmetics, and how do cosmetics address men? Are there any taboos to be lifted?
