Croda invests in the New Technologies company Cutitronics

cream - Ride

Croda International Plc "Croda", creator and manufacturer of high-performance specialty chemicals used by industries and consumers worldwide, today announced its investment in the multi-award-winning company "Cutitronics". The company is known for developing a new digital solution to meet the demands of cosmetics consumers.
In response to the growing demand for personalized skin treatments, Croda recognized the need to seek out more innovative technologies. This led to their taking a minority stake in Cutitronics, whose patented handheld device assesses skin health and prepares it to optimize the action of the skincare formula it releases.
The company, which grew out of the University of Strathcycle in Scotland, was established in 2014. The device developed by Cutitronics, the CutiTron, currently in the prototype stage, analyzes the skin's condition and takes into account aspects that can influence its state, such as the environment. It then offers a tailor-made application to a specifically targeted area of the skin. This device will also help Croda in its future product development. It provides a far greater amount of data than before, and gives Croda a better understanding of consumer needs and the factors that influence those needs.
Croda has a unique commercial agreement with Cutitronics. This relationship is a direct result of Croda's commitment to its open innovation program with UK universities. This remains a key strategic focus for Croda, which will continue to invest in this area.
Sandra Breene, President of Personal Care and North America at Croda, will join the Cutitronics Board of Directors as a non-executive director to share her 25 years of knowledge of the cosmetics market. Cutitronics will also benefit from Croda's formulation expertise, as well as its proven ability to bring new innovations to market.
Breene said: "I'm delighted to be personally involved in this partnership, which will enable Croda not only to be part of this intelligent application platform, but also to use the latest digital technologies and the data recorded on them to enrich its knowledge of consumer behavior."
"We have long known that digitalization will play a key role in our growth strategy. With this wealth of information, we can continue to develop innovative and sustainable ingredients, provide better guiding formulas as well as share our knowledge with our customers to help them develop the next generation of products that will meet the still unmet needs of the market."
Dr David Heath, founder and CEO of Cutitronics: "Having validated the CutiTron technologically and commercially, Croda's support will enable us to bring our technology to market. Their long-standing reputation for delivering innovative solutions to the cosmetics industry is invaluable to us, and we are very much looking forward to working with such a responsive and forward-looking company."

Launch of the second season of Expanscience Open Innovation

Laboratoires Expanscience - Statue

Building on the success of its first seasonExpanscience, an independent French pharmaceutical and dermo-cosmetics laboratory specializing in the treatment of osteoarthritis and skin health, renews its start-up gas pedal focusing on "health, well-being and prevention".

Laboratoires Expanscience gas pedal
The Expanscience gas pedal, launched in 2016, is the concrete reflection of the implementation of the Open Innovation approach initiated in 2015 within the laboratory. It opens up its innovation process to a wider ecosystem of stakeholders. The special feature of this hybrid gas pedal is that it speeds up external projects developed by start-ups, and intrapreneurship projects led by Laboratoires Expanscience employees. The latter are subject to the same selection process as external projects. For the second season of the "health, well-being and prevention" gas pedal, Laboratoires Expanscience is launching a call for applications from start-ups looking to boost their new offerings in these fields. Registrations are open until October 10, 2017, directly on dedicated website: accelerateur.expanscience.com

Karen Lemasson, Director of CSR and Open Innovation at Laboratoires Expanscience, emphasizes "Today, open and collaborative working is decisive for responding better and faster to the expectations of customers, patients and our societal challenges. Creating value cannot be done alone: openness and sharing are key. We now know how enriching it is for start-ups and for our laboratory to conduct experiments on a win/win partnership basis. The opening of the second edition of the Expanscience gas pedal will enable us to create even stronger synergies between our company and start-ups."

Boosting new offerings in the fields of health, well-being and prevention
To be eligible, start-ups must demonstrate synergies with Expanscience's expertise in skin health and the treatment of osteoarticular diseases. Accelerated projects must fit into one of the following themes:
- Helping patients with osteoarticular diseases maintain their mobility
- Placing skin and touch at the heart of children's sensory and cognitive development
- Promoting proximity to patients, consumers and healthcare professionals
- Develop industrial product design tools (time-to-market optimization, traceability, eco-design, etc.).
Details of themes on https://accelerateur.expanscience.com

Experimentation and accelerated go to market
The 3 start-ups selected to join the Expanscience gas pedal will benefit from 6 months' access to Laboratoires Expanscience's teams, infrastructure and sales network, as well as tailored support. The resources made available to the start-ups (sales forces, innovation, R&D, marketing and medical teams, etc.) will enable them to accelerate their go-to-market or expand their potential markets. The objectives of the experimentation to be carried out with Expanscience and the resources to be deployed will be defined at the start of the acceleration.
At the end of these 6 months, a Demo Day will mark the end of the program and unveil the results of the selected start-ups' work.

Prerequisites for joining the Expanscience Season 2 gas pedal
Start-ups will need to have an established team and at least one working prototype to their credit, which can be brought to market during 2018. Initial commercial traction is a plus.

Whitonyl by Silab, and the complexion becomes opal

Face - Cosmetics industry

In 2007, SILAB developed Whitonyl by focusing on the major player in melanogenesis, the melanocyte, through the study of tyrosinase activity, melanosome transport and SCF (Stem Cell Factor) signaling. Thanks to innovative approaches, SILAB is now able to provide additional efficacy data by exploring the impact of the environment on melanogenesis and Whitonyl's ability to regulate two novel pathways:
- melanocyte epigenome;
- communication via keratinocyte exosomes

The development of new expertise dedicated to exosomes has enabled SILAB to be one of the first to identify this mode of intercellular communication and its effects on photo-induced pigmentation.

By modulating the various mechanisms that regulate melanogenesis, Whitonyl effectively combats the signs of cutaneous photoaging.

Depigmenting and lightening action
Whitonyl's depigmenting and lightening power has been demonstrated on both Caucasian and Asian skins.

After 56 days of twice-daily application and compared to placebo, Whitonyl at 4% attenuates age spots by :
- significantly increasing the parameters L* (skin clarity) and ITA° (degree of pigmentation);
- reducing the b* parameter (melanin yellow pigmentation).
Skin is even and clear, complexion brightens and pigmentation spots fade.

Low environmental impact sourcing

Whitonyl is a natural active ingredient, rich in xylans and galactans, derived from the red seaweed Palmaria palmata (INCI name: Water & Palmaria palmata Extract).
The supply of this marine species is guaranteed to have a low environmental impact, thanks on the one hand to its geographical proximity (mainly to the Atlantic, Channel and North Sea coasts) and on the other hand to its adaptability (fixed to rocks thanks to a disc that facilitates its renewal after harvesting).
Obtained through a non-denaturing manufacturing process, Whitonyl is a patented active ingredient, available in aqueous solution (recommended dose: 1 to 4%) and preservative-free powder form (recommended dose: 0.1 to 1%), in compliance with international cosmetics regulations (Europe, USA, Japan, China).

Light and color for Surlyn at Luxe Pack 2017

Packaging and labelling - Hot stamping

Hot stamping Surlyn hoods with gold or silver is now possible thanks to the development of a special film, the fruit of close collaboration between DuPont Performance Materials and Leonhard Kurz, a world leader in hot stamping and cold transfer technology.

It took several months of research and development to meet this technological challenge, which is so dear to DuPont, as Maria Carcolé, EMEA Marketing Leader Perfumes & Cosmetics at DuPont, points out. We are constantly developing new projects and work actively upstream with cosmetics brands to meet their needs in terms of creativity, innovation and uniqueness. Our understanding of market trends and expectations, and our close collaboration with market players, have enabled us to develop new decorative effects for Surlyn, such as hot stamping, which produces a high-gloss colored or metallic decoration, giving packaging a luxurious, refined touch. ".

This technically complex project mobilized a great deal of expertise and energy. The challenge was to develop a film specifically adapted for effective hot stamping, even at low temperatures. The DuPont Performance Materials technical team surrounded itself with the best specialists in hot stamping technologies, and carried out in-depth tests on the material, with the help of C. Bracco EIRL.

The Kurz Group, experienced in complex projects, took on the challenge of developing the film. "For us, the challenge was twofold: to achieve good film adhesion at low temperatures, while maintaining the high gloss of the material. After numerous tests on different research bases, and with the invaluable help of DuPont, we developed a film specifically dedicated to Surlyn hot stamping, ensuring perfect rendering on the material, whether for flat areas or fine details. It's a small revolution that opens up unprecedented decoration possibilities for brands", enthuses Stéphane Royère, Head of Business Area Industrial Products at Kurz.

The film developed also offers excellent adhesion and has passed all known abrasion resistance tests. The team even worked on developing a second version of the film, ensuring absolutely identical gloss between the heat-marked side and the other blank sides. " The valuable lessons learned from this development phase are already being put to good use in new projects for metallized and pigmented marking films. without metallization "says Stéphane Royère.

The DuPont Surlyn range is renowned for giving cosmetics brand creators and designers immense freedom of expression. With this latest development in hot stamping, DuPont is further extending the range of decorative possibilities offered by Surlyn. Thanks to more than 20 years of research into new materials and the development of innovative effects, Surlyn has revolutionized fragrance and beauty packaging worldwide, offering almost infinite possibilities for shapes and finishes. " The Surlyn range offers a wide spectrum of different grades for very high-end creations with luxurious finishes, to simpler designs and opaque or metallic renderings. Surlyn is not just a resin with exceptional transparency and brilliance for thick parts, but a veritable palette of materials that responds to extremely varied creative and design needs. We see it again today with the new decorative effects made possible by hot stamping, which will enable designers and perfume brands to personalize and further differentiate their packaging. "concludes Maria Carcolé.

DuPont and the Kurz Group will present these developments on their respective stands at Luxe Pack Monaco - October 2-4, 2017.
