A detox ritual to promote scalp health and microbial diversity

Today's lifestyle as well as environmental influences such as dust and pollution are altering the physiological parameters of the scalp and making hair and scalp problems more common around the world. An unhealthy scalp is often oily, covered with dandruff, and can become tender.

To remedy this Basf has created Scalposin, a new active ingredient which, according to the company, soothes and purifies the scalp by reducing sebum production and by replenishing the scalp's microbiota.

Building the microbiome for a healthy scalp

Virtually unexplored until now, the scalp is home to several types of microorganisms living in harmony with human cells. In a metagenomic study, Basf explored the disruptive influence of sebum on this fragile microbiotic balance. “The analysis confirmed that the diversity of the microbiota is lower on an oily scalp than on a normal scalp. A product containing 1% Scalposin significantly increased the diversity of the scalp microbiota after one month of application - the number of taxa increased by 36% compared to placebo. In addition, the active principle had a prebiotic effect by stimulating recolonization with six strains of bacteria previously identified by Basf researchers as being beneficial for a healthy scalp as a whole, ” says one within the business.

Reduce sebum production for a purified scalp

Excess production of sebum in the hair follicles not only promotes the reduction of beneficial bacteria strains but irritates the scalp, causes the skin to crumble and makes the hair appear oily. “In vitro tests have shown that Scalposin, at a dose of 0.7%, effectively reduces by up to 77% the expression of the 5α-reductase 1 gene, the enzyme initiating the process of sebum production. A one-month placebo-controlled clinical study confirmed the ability of the active ingredient to reduce the level of sebum in the scalp. In addition, 82% of study participants reported an immediate soothing effect on the scalp, while some even observed a decrease in desquamation after 28 days of application, ” says Basf.

With Scalposine (INCI: Glycerin (and) Water (and) Sarcosine), Basf has developed a holistic approach based on Sarcosine, an amino acid derivative found naturally in the human body. It is a precursor of glycine, an amino acid essential for the construction of the main skin macromolecules such as elastin and collagen.
